We met Karina when she had been living alone in the hospital for six years, undergoing haemodialysis. She was only 11 years old. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine the life of a girl who fights for her life on her own, constantly staying in a medical institution.
We saw her ‘room’ - a corner in the hospital ward with toys, discs and a collection of nail polishes. The child was so eager to make the space feel like home, and she did it as best she could. The girl's condition was not easy: instead of her kidneys, she had to undergo double dialysis every day. The doctors said that the little body could not withstand such a load, so the only chance to survive was to find a life-saving kidney.
We at the ‘Mother and Child’ decided to act immediately. But we kept encountering obstacles that needed to be overcome urgently. Due to legal issues, it was impossible for Karina to get permission for the operation in Ukraine.
It was necessary to act ‘already’, which would allow us to send the girl for surgery abroad. And Together with you, we coped with this task! The surgery and rehabilitation were successful.
Now Karina is an almost grown-up girl who has everything she dreamed of: family, friends and a normal life. Before she met her guardians, she had never been to a regular school. It's good that all this is behind her!
