The Mother and Baby Charitable Organization evacuated more than 1500 children during the war. Oleksiy from Kharkiv, born with spina bifida, successfully underwent treatment in Italy
The war brought a lot of grief and trials to Ukrainian families, and our little angels were in danger as well. From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, the volunteers of the Mother and Child Charity Foundation evacuated more than 1500 children from Kyiv, Bucha, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro and other regions where they were in danger. Children with severe diagnoses such as spina bifida, oncology, and hydrocephalus, who needed urgent treatment, needed special help. Parents were in despair, not knowing how to help their babies in this terrible time.
Our organization, the Mother and Baby Charitable Foundation, has learned over 20 years of activity that delay in such cases is unacceptable, because the consequences can be terrible. We knew we had to act immediately! Thanks to our international partners and caring people, we managed to organize the transportation of children for treatment to Italy from the first days of the war. Most of them have already received the necessary help and returned home. We continue to keep in touch with the families and remember each story, because each of them is a small victory.
One such story is that of little Oleksiy from Kharkiv. He was born just before the war with a diagnosis of spina bifida. At 5 a.m. on February 24, his mother Anna woke up to the explosions and realized that there was no way to save her child in the region in the basement. She sought support from caring people and found the contacts of our organization. Already in the spring of 2024, thanks to joint efforts, Anna and Oleksiy were transported to Rome, to the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù clinic, where the baby steadily underwent the necessary surgeries and treatment.
Now the family is already in Ukraine, and Oleksiy is pleased with his achievements every day. He has recovered and is developing fully. His smile is the best reward for all our efforts.
