Supporting mothers and babies in the colony despite changes

For over 8 years, we have been supporting mothers and babies behind barbed wire at the Chernihiv penal colony. Together, we enjoy children's performances at holidays, hold photoshoots, and congratulate newborns with baby boxes (by the way, this is the only category of women who give birth who do not receive them). Today, we delivered essential warm clothes, shoes, overalls, diapers, and baby hygiene products. All of this is as necessary for them as it is for all other little ones.

The only thing is, we were met with sad, or rather, shocking news – the orphanage and colony are being disbanded. Mothers and babies will be transferred to other correctional facilities. Why are we surprised?

The orphanage at the Chernihiv colony is the result of a successful international program, with modern living conditions for mothers and babies. This means that convicted mothers who are pregnant or have children under 3 years were transferred there to serve their sentences. The conditions are fully conducive for children to stay there from birth. And most importantly – together with their mothers. Modern rooms, furniture, and toys. It's indistinguishable from good kindergartens, except for the barbed wire outside the window.

We hope that the higher leadership will make a well-considered decision in favor of dignified living conditions for the little ones who have been deprived of a choice since birth.
